What you need to know about CBD

Cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive component of cannabis, is developing a reputation as the cure of the moment. But science knows very little about what it does in the human body. Therefore, the operation of this drug - even if it works - is a mystery.

There is one exception: tests of a medical cannabidiol oil (also known as CBD) called Epidiolex show that it can reduce seizures caused by certain types of epilepsy. A committee of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended this week to approve Epidiolex as a new drug.

What is CBD?

Cannabis contains more than 100 chemical compounds called cannabinoids. The best known are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD (cannabidiol).

On the other hand, our bodies contain receptors for cannabinoids. CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain, and CB2 receptors are found in other types of cells, including those in the immune system and the digestive system. We have these receptors because we also have endocannabinoids, or cannabinoids that our body produces naturally.
Marijuana Overdose?

It is assumed that the overdose of marijuana is not lethal. The US Drug Enforcement Administration explains in a fact sheet that "deaths from marijuana overdoses have never been reported," and the National Institutes of Health contends that "there is not enough evidence" to link an overdose of THC (the psychoactive principal of cannabis) with death.

A team of researchers from the University of Columbia (Canada) has scanned the genome of cannabis plants and has found the genes responsible for giving the different flavors of the varieties of the plant. Put another way, science has figured out why marijuana tastes like this.

The researchers found the genes responsible for giving those flavors of different varieties of cannabis. About 30 genes were found to contribute decisively to the various flavors in cannabis.

To give us an idea, the number is comparable to similar genes that are major players in the flavor of the vine for the wine industry. In fact, the genes discovered play an important role in the production of natural products such as limonene, myrcene and pinene in cannabis plants (these molecules are generally known in the industry as terpenes).
